A few weeks ago, I wrote about the importance of social marketing, but I must admit, I forgot a step. Unfortunately, I’m not the only one who skipped the first and most important step. Search engines have been around far longer than social networking and while they’re not perfect, they’re far more mature and perfected than the newcomers on the block.
Case in point, a friend of mine was recently put in charge of redeveloping a major corporation’s website and help them out with their social presence. He contacted me a few weeks after the site was launched to get some feedback from me. He explained to me what they had done to improve their online presence and what their strategies were for marketing themselves through all the major social networks. I pulled up the website while he was talking to me, began looking at the code, and noticed one major problem – they had done absolutely nothing to optimize their website for average search rankings, let alone good ones.
